The big day has come and gone! Three of Dumas’ five student artists attended the Citywide TechXPO downtown at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Tuesday, May 26th was our neighborhood TechXPO where we presented our film with three other neighborhood schools. Four of the five participants were able to make it to the presentation. Additionally, we had five Dumas teachers, eight Dumas students, and four Dumas parents come and show their support!

3. How does the Woodlawn TechXPO prepare you for the citywide presentation at the Museum of Contemporary Art on Friday?

After much hard work editing, our project is complete. We have two presentations ahead of us: the neighborhood TechXPO on May 26th, and the citywide AYV presentation at Museum of Contemporary Art on May 29th.  To prepare for these events, we are practicing our public speaking in front of adults at our school.

1. What are challenges are you anticipating with the presentation?

3. What do you need to practice to be fully prepared?

After determining the subject, collecting footage, viewing our media, and creating a storyboard, we are finally ready to begin editing. With a deadline of May 14th right around the corner, we don’t have much time. 

In your reflection, please answer the following questions.

1. How is teamwork with your peers working/not working?

2. What are challenges you are facing?

3. What successes are you proud of?

After viewing all of the collected footage, we had to figure out how to merge five different lives into one cohesive movie that relates a create a single message.

In your reflection, explain how the process for melding ideas. How did you decide what to include, and what to leave out? How will this help your narration during the editing process?

Today we were viewing all of the footage that was collected. As a group project, we took turns taking home a digital camera and camcorder. We watched everything that our peers came up with and have to start thinking about how this will fit into our final video.

Write a reflection about the process of weeding through footage. Remember to include:

2. How did you feel about what your piece looked like/what other’s pieces looked like?

3. Did seeing your work projected on a large screen affect your reaction?

Today we were “storyboarding.” The storyboard prepares us for what we will take pictures of when we get home. The topic of our project compares single-parent households to two-parent households.

Write a reflection about the process of storyboarding. Remember to include:

1. What they did for the assignment

2. How they felt about what they learned/created and why they felt that way.

Eighth grade is participating in the Adobe Youth Voices. The point of this project is to demonstrate the power of technology to engage middle-school-age youth by using video, multimedia, digital art, web, animation, and audio tools that enable youth to explore and comment on their world.

This blog serves as an area for students to reflect on the process of making media.
